Instagram: no longer a photo-sharing app

The Head of Instagram recently announced that Instagram is no longer a photo sharing app.

What does this mean?

If we read between the lines, it means Instagram is becoming more like Tik Tok.

It doesn’t mean the “square photo feed” is disappearing.

The feed (at this point in time will remain), however your feed will most likely be de-prioritised in terms of reach and engagement.

Where to from here?

Well, the first thing you need to do is review your social media strategy – in particular your Instagram strategy.

What are your goals? Are they still relevant? Chances are they are – it’s more the “how are you going to achieve them” that will change.

And that means including more videos in your marketing plan.

Yep, you need to get comfortable with video and creating video content.
And just like any other strategy, have a plan about how you’re going to use it.

Not convinced?

Here’s three reasons why you need to start focusing on video content (apart from Instagram and other platforms telling us “it’s all about video”).

1. It's what people want

Here comes a stat…
A Hubspot survey in 2018 explored the type of content and channels that best attracts people’s time and attention.

The clear winner was video.

People want engaging and entertaining content on social media. Video is one of the most bestest formats to do that (yes, I said most bestest!).

2. Video gets engagement

Content that engages gets prioritised by the almighty algorithm.

We also know engagement means you’re delivering content of value.

When you deliver content of value to your ideal clients you’re building the know, like, and trust factor.

And the KL&T factor drives sales.

Mike drop!

3. Video stays around longer

Because video is what people want and it therefore gets more engagement – that means your video content will stay around longer.

If your video has awesome content that’s created engagement, it will “pop up” into people’s socials more often, creating more engagement, creating more opportunities for it to “pop up” again.

Loop de loop de loop de loop…

Go forth and Instagram

If you’re not creating video content yet, now is the time to get started.

People love to see the Reel you (did you see what I did there 🤣 ).

And that means simple, authentic content can work best – especially when it comes to building the know, like, and trust factor.

Remember – your video content doesn’t have to be perfect. You’ll get better at it as you do more and more.

So, go forth, review your Instagram strategy, and get creating video content.
