Instagram and business: Is it worth it?

Instagram and business: Is it worth it?

Should I be on Instagram for my business?

As a business owner, you're always looking for new ways to reach your target audience and grow your business. Instagram has over 1 billion monthly active users, so it's no surprise that it's one of the most popular social media platforms out there. But is it really worth using for your business?

Here's an overview of what Instagram is, how businesses use it, and some current trends to keep in mind.

Instagram and business

What is Instagram

Put simply, Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social media platform that was launched in 2010.

It was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion.

It has since grown to have over 1 billion monthly active users, making it one of the most popular social media platforms out there.

Today, Instagram has changed to an entertainment platform, focusing on video content rather than being an image sharing platform – although you can still do that.

You can read more about this change in direction here.

How do businesses use Instagram?

There are a few different ways businesses can use Instagram.

One is to share photos and videos of their products or services. This can be a great way to give customers a behind-the-scenes look at your business and show them what you're all about.

Another way businesses can use Instagram is by running ads. Instagram offers a wide range of targeting options, so you can reach your target audience with ease. And with over 95% of businesses using Facebook Ads, it's likely that a good portion of your target audience is also on Instagram.

Finally, businesses can use Instagram to share videos via Stories and Reels. They're a great way to share your day-to-day activities with your followers and give them a look at what it's like to work at your business. As well as showcasing your services or products.

What are some current trends to keep in mind?

There are a few trends you'll want to keep in mind when using Instagram for your business.

Video

One is video, which means focusing on Instagram Stories and Reels.

Stories are a series of photos or videos that expire after 24 hours (although you can save them to your highlights for a longer period). They're a great way to share your day-to-day activities with your followers and give them a look at what it's like to work at your business.

Reels are short, engaging videos that people can watch with or without sound. They're perfect for showing off your products or services in a creative way. Think the TikTok of Instagram.

Meta (aka Facebook & Instagram) are currently prioritising reels to try and attract the TikTok audience.

That means you'll probably see a decline in the reach (and therefore engagement) of any other type of post you share on Instagram (and Facebook too).

Micro-Influencers

Another trend is micro-influencers.

These are social media users with a smaller following who have high engagement rates. Because of their smaller following, they're often more affordable to work with than bigger influencers. And since they have high engagement rates, they can be more effective in promoting your products or services.

Features

Finally, you'll want to keep an eye on the latest Instagram features. Meta are always introducing new features for both Facebook and Instagram.

Jumping on the bandwagon and being an early adopter of these features should (I say should, there's no guarantee), help your build your Instagram following and even help increase sales.

For example, Instagram has a shopping feature called Checkout. This allows people to buy products directly from businesses on Instagram. So if you sell products, you'll want to make sure you're taking advantage of this feature.

Why should businesses use Instagram?

There are a few reasons businesses should use Instagram.

Ideal Clients

First, it's a great way to reach your ideal clients, aka your target audience.

With over 1 billion monthly active users, there's a good chance your target audience is on Instagram.

And with the various targeting options available, you can easily reach them with your ads.

Increase Awareness

Second, it's a great platform for promoting your products or services.

Whether you're sharing photos and videos of your products or running ads, Instagram is a great way to get people interested in what you're selling.

Connections

Finally, it's a great way to build relationships with your customers.

By sharing behind-the-scenes photos and videos, you can give them a look at what it's like to work at your business, as well as showcasing your services and products.

And by responding to their comments and questions, you can show that you care about your customers and their experience with your business.

Start with strategy

So if you're not already using Instagram for your business, perhaps you should start.

Remember though – ALWAYS start with strategy. Have a strategy in place for your Instagram activity. Be clear on:

There you have it. Instagram and business – it can be worth it!
